Platt-LePage was chosen and accepted a government contract worth nearly $500,000 to produce the PL-3 under the USAAF designation XR-1. Gregory became the first American military helicopter pilot. Igor Sikorsky invited Army Air Corps helicopter project officer, Major Frank Gregory to fly the one-of-a-kind demonstrator VS-300 (S-46). The USAAF helicopter evaluation board met to review bids to build "a rotary wing aircraft in the interest of adequate national defense." On this day in aviation history the FIRST flyable helicopter, piloted by Igor Sikorsky, the Sikorsky V-300, makes its FIRST flight. Air Classics Magazine, Vol. Army Material Division published the first specifications for an USAAF helicopter. Army bought a Kellett KD-1 autogyro for evaluation and designated it the YG-1A, s/n 36-352, making it the FIRST practical "rotary-wing" aircraft used by the U.S.
